Kelly Smith & Mata
K9 Handler // Multipurpose K9 - Patrol, Narcotics, Tracking
"When I completed my Marine Corps tour, I want immediately into law enforcement. I have been in LE for 24 years now, and like most, done a little of it all. Along the way, I've worked in the DEA, FBI National Academy Session 240, and worked my way up from a jailer/dispatcher, to patrol, then sergeant, SWAT Commander, Lieutenant, Police Chief, and now Constable.
Of the thousands of hours of training, the completion of two degrees, and all the successes in the field, my dedication has always been a commitment to my wife, family, and dogs.
My "dog handling" days were all started in Wood County, Texas, when I was gifted my first dog, Juma, from K9Officers.org. Juma and I partnered up for two years, but we lost her to Addisons Disease on 2/22/2021.
Now with Mata, my partner of a year, we work multipurpose duty - patrol, narcotics and tracking. We have successfully deployed numerous times with commendable apprehensions, tracks and arrests. It is a blessing to be a part of the k9 community for the past three years, and I look forward to further developing our skills and continuing our success. We have been fortunate to be featured in numerous videos, K9 Cops magazine and had the unwavering support of our K9 community and citizens from around the world."
Their Gear: "Tracking gloves and leads, agitation muzzle, Nomad harness, Garmin and Dogtra E-Collars."
