K9 Spotlight: Mike Morgan and Koa

This Is Koa, a Belgian Malinois, and our journey started last year. When I was hired on with the agency I am with now, Law Enforcement had a black eye due to some incidents that occurred before my time. When I was hired on, my Chief told me that he wanted me to get involved in the community.

I took it to heart, and that's exactly what I did! I started a lot of programs and events that have never happened in our community. The trust and bond between Law Enforcement and the public slowly started building. I noticed that there was a drug problem and there was not a K9 for miles - let alone in our county.

I spoke to my Chief about getting a K9 and he 100% backed the idea. We took it before the City Council and asked them if we could get a K9 if we raised the money for it. After a presentation to show them the need, they gave us their blessing. A lot of the people of our community were against this, and we promised that not a dime would come from the taxpayers' pockets.I am a man of faith and prayed to God asking, "Lord if this is Your Will, then let it be done."

Within two months. I raised over $30,000. Koa was purchased along with everything that he would need. Everything was purchased though Ray Allen and we were impressed with the customer service and quality of their products. Koa flew from Europe to Alabama. I had been praying for a dog that would fit the needs for our community and my home life. I have four young children and our family dog. I was concerned that he would not fit in with my family or community. All of a sudden, the kennel in Alabama sent me pictures and videos of Koa. My heart was full of joy! He was exactly what I saw in my dreams! Koa has a white heart on his chest and that tells me that he was made with love and was meant for my family and community.

I know that Koa and myself will make a huge impact on our community. The bond that we have been working so hard to rebuild up has become even stronger. The people of our community are noticing that we are here for them, and that we are doing the best we can to battle against the rise in drugs and crime.
