What Are The FAA’s Dog Kennel Requirements?

Like its regulations for human passengers, the FAA’s rules for dog crates are designed to keep your K9 safe while they’re in transit in an airplane’s cargo hold.

Chief among the regulations is that all kennels must have air ventilation holes running the length of four sides. Every kennel must be made of a heavy-duty and waterproof material like metal, fiberglass, or thick plastic.

The FAA requires all dog crates to have handling bars along both sides to make it easy for airline employees to transport working dogs from the terminal to the airplane.

To ensure your dog stays well-fed and hydrated, food and water bowls must be attached to the inside of the front door. Additionally, these bowls must be refillable without opening the front door.

Finally, FAA mandates state that all kennels transporting working dogs must have “Live Animal” labels on at least two sides along with the dog’s name, owner’s contact info, and the time the K9 was last fed and watered.

It’s not a rule, but the FAA advises owners to attach a leash and a collar to the outside of the kennel. Putting these items in a plastic bag and taping them to the kennel makes it easier to seamlessly transition your K9 from their kennel back to “working mode.”
