The SAM® Splint - Veterinary is a versatile, lightweight and moldable splint that can be used to immobilize your K9 after injury. The revolutionary design is composed of a thin core of aluminum, sandwiched between two layers of waterproof, hypoallergenic closed cell foam. SAM® Splints are globally acclaimed by emergency care providers, outdoor enthusiasts, the U.S. military, and even NASA. The reusable splint is a necessary tool for all SAR K9 handlers, MWD handlers, and Police K9 teams for the simple fact that it's simple to use, effective, and can be stored easily, by rolling or folding into your IFAK, haversack, or first aid kit. 

Although extremely pliable, they are soft enough to cut (to size) with ordinary household scissors. When bent into any simple curved shape, the splint becomes rigid, providing stabilization of injured limbs and joints. In addition to its versatility, the splint is radiolucent allowing diagnostic, high quality x-rays to be taken while the splint is applied. 

SAM® Splints are MRI conditionally safe up to 3 Tesla with a minimal (10mm) artifact halo.

1. CUT-TO-SIZE
SAM® Splint’s two layers of closed-cell foam and its aluminum interior can be cut with ordinary scissors to adapt to any size requirements.

2. MOLDABLE ALUMINUM
Flat, O-temper aluminum inside the splint’s outer layers molds easily, allowing for a wide spectrum of applications.

Exterior closed-pore foam can be cleaned and disinfected with bleach and water for reuse.2

Care and Maintenance

The SAM® Splint - Veterinary is a reusable malleable splint that can be properly cleaned and disinfected for additional field service. These guidelines are recommendations for maximizing the service life of the SAM® Splint. 

Cleaning Procedure (for reuse)

If you decide to re-use the SAM® Splint, it should be initially cleaned using a cloth or sponge soaked with soap and water or a mild detergent to remove gross contamination. Any blood, body fluids, tissue or other soil materials should be completely removed prior to disinfection. Next, prepare a dilution of sodium hypochlorite bleach (for example Clorox, White King) for a final concentration of 0.625% to 0.7%. This can typically be done with one-part bleach to 9 parts of water with normal household bleach, or one-part bleach to 11 parts of water for “concentrated” bleach. Fully immerse the split in the diluted bleach solution ensuring all air bubbles are removed from the Splint by wiping each of the surfaces (including the sides) with a clean cloth while in the bleach solution. Allow it to remain submerged in the bleach solution for 10 minutes following wiping. ALWAYS rinse the splint thoroughly with running water following immersion then allow to air dry or towel dry before placing it back into service.
